THAT DRIVE
The idea for WNCWoods was formed on a quiet get-away to a little cottage in the woods. On the drive there, listening to ‘Wild and Free,’ (a reflective point of view book of a secular home-schooling family) was actually setting the mood for the rest of the weekend, and the rest of our lives. Relaxing on the sofa at the cottage, clearing our minds while staring up at the timber-framed roof resting true on the two foot thick stone walls, we reflected on what the home-schooling mother had described. In that moment, we decided to make a change and live the life we knew we should. For the rest of our time in this cozy space, the thoughts spilled out, nurturing this little idea that we had stumbled upon. With our family of four nearing a family of five, and a life overwhelmed by unknowns, we sketched out our road-map the following weeks.
We are now that family of five, pushing through and taking the steps that we hope lead us to making this dream our reality.
So where are we going…
We are headed to a life where we don’t live to work OR work to live, we just live. We live ‘wild and free’ within the generous woodlands, among the elements, and with the community we are helping to form.
While building our Campground and providing our other services, we aim to simultaneously start building our humble home as a family. On a wooded 30 acres nestled in the Blue Ridge, we will mindfully harvest and mill our timbers, and using hand cut traditional joinery, timber-frame our home. The stone Hearth will be the heart of the home, surrounded by pounded-earth floor and straw bail walls. The rest of the land will be kept for the critters and trees, visited only by our tipping toes.
